EDTA Method: Numericals
- Calculate total, permanent and
temporary hardness of water in ppm from following observations, 50 ml of
0.04M ZnSO4 required 20 ml EDTA soln. 50 ml of hard water sample required
22.5 ml of EDTA soln. and 50 ml boiled hard water sample required 16.5 ml
of EDTA soln.
[Ans: Total hardness = 4500 ppm, Permanent
hardness = 3300 ppm, Temporary hardness = 1200 ppm]
- In EDTA method, 100 ml of 0.02M
ZnSO4 required 40 ml EDTA. Whereas 25 ml sample water required 18 ml EDTA
and 25 ml boiled sample water required 12.5 ml EDTA. Calculate total,
permanent and temporary hardness of water in ppm.
[Ans: Total hardness = 3600 ppm, Permanent
hardness = 2500 ppm, Temporary hardness = 1100 ppm]
- In EDTA method, 100 ml sample
water required 12 ml of 0.02M EDTA and 100 ml boiled sample water required
8 ml EDTA. Calculate total, permanent and temporary hardness of water in
ppm. [Ans: Total hardness = 240
ppm, Permanent hardness = 160 ppm, Temporary hardness = 80 ppm]
- Calculate total, permanent and
temporary hardness of water, if in EDTA method 50 ml sample water required
14 ml of 0.01M EDTA and 50 ml boiled sample water required 9 ml EDTA.
[Ans:
Total hardness = 280 ppm, Permanent hardness = 180 ppm, Temporary hardness =
100 ppm]
- Calculate total, permanent and
temporary hardness of water in ppm from following observations, 30 ml of
0.02M ZnSO4 required 40 ml EDTA soln. 25 ml of hard water sample required
27 ml of EDTA soln. and 25 ml boiled hard water sample required 18 ml of
EDTA soln. [Ans: Total hardness =
1620 ppm, Permanent hardness = 1080 ppm, Temporary hardness = 540 ppm]
- Calculate total, permanent and
temporary hardness of water if 25 ml of N/50 ZnSO4 required 16.5 ml EDTA
soln. 25 ml of hard water sample requiùred 19.2 ml of EDTA soln. and 25 ml
boiled hard water sample required 14.6 ml of EDTA soln. [Ans: Total hardness = 1152 ppm, Permanent hardness = 876 ppm,
Temporary hardness = 276 ppm]
- In EDTA method, 10 ml of sample
water required 16.8 ml of 0.025 N EDTA soln. Whereas 10 ml boiled sample
water required 11.2 ml of same EDTA soln. Calculate total, permanent and
te humporary hardness of water in ppm. [Ans: Total hardness = 2100 ppm,
Permanent hardness = 1400 ppm, Temporary hardness = 700 ppm]
- Calculate Total, Temporary
& Permanent hardness of sample water, if 25ml of water sample required
15.5ml of 0.05M EDTA & 25 ml boiled sample water required 9.5 ml of
same EDTA.
[Ans: Total hardness: 3100 ppm;
Temporary hardness: 1200ppm; Permanent hardness: 1900 ppm]
- 50 ml of sample water required
6ml of N/20 EDTA solution whereas 50ml of same water sample, after boiling
required 4 ml of N/20 EDTA solution. Calculate Total, Temporary &
Permanent hardness of sample water.
[Ans: Total hardness: 300ppm; Temporary
hardness: 100ppm; Permanent hardness: 200ppm]
Zeolite Process: Numericals
1. The hardness of 20,000
lit of sample water was completely removed by Zeolite softener. The exhausted
zeolite then required 200 lit of NaCl Solution containing 1500mg/lit NaCl for
regeneration. Calculate hardness of sample water in ppm.[ Ans: 12.82 ppm]
2. An exhausted zeolite was regenerated by
passing 150 lit of NaCl solution, having strength of 150 gm/lit NaCl. How many
litres of sample water having 650ppm hardness can be softened? [Ans: 29585.79
lit.]
3. How many litres of 6 %
NaCl solution will be required to regenerate zeolite which has capacity of
softening 1058 lit. of water having 300 ppm CaCO3 eq.
Hardness. [ Ans: 585 lit.]
4. An exhausted zeolite
softener was regenerated by 200 lit. Of 15 % NaCl .How many litre of hard water
sample having hardness 450 ppm can be softened by this? [Ans: 56980 lit.]

How many litre of 8% NaCl solution will be
required to regenerate zeolite which has capacity of softening 50,000 lit. Of
sample water containing Ca(HCO3)2=72.9
ppm,CaSO4 = 61.02 ppm, MgCl2 =42.75 ppm, Mg (NO3)2=
37ppm,Ca(NO3)2=73.8ppm [Ans: 149.9 or 150lit.]
6. An exhausted zeolite
softener was regenerated by 80 lit of 12 % NaCl. How many lit. Of hard water
sample having hardness 260ppm can be softened by this softener. [Ans: 31558.18 lit.]
7. How many litres of 19
% NaCl solution will be required to regenerate zeolite which has capacity of
softening 50,000 lit. Of water having 350 ppm CaCO3 eq.
Hardness. [Ans: 107.763 lit.]

An exhausted zeolite was regenerated by passing 150 lit of NaCl
solution, having strength of 45 gm/lit NaCl. How many litres of sample hard
water having 500ppm hardness can be softened by this softener? [Ans: 13500
lit.]

An exhausted zeolite softener was regenerated by 200 lit. Of 15
% NaCl .How many litre of hard water sample having hardness 450 ppm can be
softened by this? Ans: 56980 lit.]
